All-Elite Wrestling (AEW) may be looking for a new developer for its next video game following the underwhelming response to 2023’s AEW Fight Forever. In an attempt to compete with the popular WWE 2K series, AEW enlisted the help of Yukes, known for classic wrestling games like WWF No Mercy, to recreate the fast-paced, arcade-style gameplay of old-school wrestling simulations. The result was AEW Fight Forever, released in June 2023.
Unfortunately, the game failed to make a major impact, receiving mixed reviews at launch and a divisive reception that persisted as additional wrestlers and game modes were introduced. While some players appreciated Fight Forever’s retro approach to wrestling, its lack of polish and limited presentation—such as the absence of in-match commentary—left many fans disappointed. Earlier this year, AEW owner Tony Khan expressed continued support for the game, but recent insider reports suggest a shift in direction may be on the horizon.

According to Insider Gaming, multiple sources have indicated that AEW’s higher-ups are “strongly considering” moving to a different developer for the next mainline console game. This decision is reportedly influenced by problems during Fight Forever’s development, with one source claiming the game exceeded its budget and underperformed upon release. Previous reports from Insider Gaming also highlighted the pressures on Yukes to deliver the game before it was fully ready.
AEW’s original contract with Yukes called for at least a year of updates for Fight Forever, which appears to have been fulfilled with the latest DLC pack that added stars like Jay White, Samoa Joe, and WWE Hall of Famer Adam Copeland. However, it remains uncertain if Yukes will continue producing more content, as several high-profile AEW talents, such as Will Ospreay and Mercedes Mone (formerly known as Sasha Banks), have yet to be added to the roster.
If AEW does decide to switch developers for its future games, it could mean the end of further updates for Fight Forever. Meanwhile, WWE has found success in the gaming world with titles like WWE 2K24, leaving AEW potentially rethinking its strategy after the mixed reception of its first major foray into virtual wrestling.
